The service will be available through April 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday at the Payson Elks Lodge, Airport Road and Highway 87, Payson. Mount Cross Lutheran Church, 601 E. Highway 260, Payson (across from Tiny’s Restaurant) has scheduled the following mid-week Lenten Suppers and Services: April 2 and 9, a supper is provided (free will offering accepted) at 5 p.m. in the log building on the Mount Cross campus; the mid-week service is held at 6 p.m. in the church sanctuary. The Payson United Methodist Church Soup & Study suppers during Lent start at 5:30 p.m., each Wednesday through April 9. At 5 p.m. the English Stations of the Cross prayers are recited to commemorate each step Jesus took on the way to Calvary, the Via Dolorosa or Way of Sorrows, Spanish Stations of the Cross are prayed at 6:30 p.m. The Mogollon Health Alliance Auxiliary is having an Arts & Crafts and Bake Sale in the hospital’s main lobby from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, April 4. Many top sellers will be available including: baby blankets, bibs and toys; scarves; catnip toys; dishcloths; jewelry; and much more. The Men’s Ministry of Ponderosa Bible Church invites all men in the community to come out at 8 a.m., Saturday, April 5 for a great breakfast and time of fellowship. The group calls this the Best Breakfast for a Buck in Town. The menu includes pancakes, link sausage, fruit bowl, orange juice, pastries and coffee. All men in the community are invited. There will be a special speaker to entertain and encourage those attending. Ponderosa Bible Church is located at 1800 N. Beeline Highway, Payson, just south of Home Depot. J.D. Maddy, president of the Astronomers of Verde Valley, will be sponsoring the first annual Star Night event Saturday, April 5 at Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. There will be two separate viewings at the park. The first one is a solar viewing from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will be able to view the sun through a telescope with a specialized lens that allows you to look directly into the sun. There will also be crafts available for kids that will help increase their knowledge of the solar system. The park entrance fee applies. The fee is $5 per person for those aged 14 and older and $2 per person for those aged 7-13. The second viewing will be the Star Night event from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. It begins with a PowerPoint presentation at 7 p.m. Shortly afterward, guests will stargaze with astronomers volunteering their expertise and telescopes. For the night event, participants should bring a folding chair, a red light (to protect everyone’s night vision), a sweater or jacket (the temperatures will drop after the sun sets). Charges for the night event will be at a discounted rate of $4 per person for those aged 14 and older and $2 per person for those aged 7-13. The Payson Lioness Club Enchanted April, Afternoon Tea & Fashion Show, co-sponsored by Dancing Queen Dresses and hosted and catered by Majestic Rim, is just around the corner. The event is from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, April 5 at the Majestic Rim, 310 E. Tyler Parkway, Payson. Proceeds go to Payson High School student scholarships and local charities. There will be silent auction, raffle and door prize items. Donate a gently used dress, suit, or accessory item and receive a free raffle ticket. Ken, Dave, Steve and Gerry will be available after the performance to speak with anyone interested learning to play an instrument. The next Payson Shred-A-Thon is from 10 a.m. to noon (or until the truck is full, whichever comes first), Friday, April 11. Businesses and individuals can take advantage of this mobile shredding service to properly dispose of your sensitive documents onsite in the parking lot of Walmart, 300 N. Beeline Highway. Look for the TNT Shredding truck parked near the highway in the Walmart parking lot. TNT Shredding is HIPAA compliant and meets all the privacy requirements for document destruction. The cost per bankers box (10-inches-by-12-inches-by-15 inches) is $6, cash or check for payment. Other sized boxes may be used, but the cost will be estimated based on volume. TNT Shredding will donate part of the proceeds to Rim Country Literacy Program’s First in Math and More summer math tutoring program for children in grades 1 through 5. The Payson Pro Rodeo is holding its annual Scholarship Fund Dance at the Star Valley Moose Lodge, Friday evening, April 11. Tickets are available for a $10 donation. They are being sold at the Chamber of Commerce, by Rodeo Committee members and at the door. This year’s event will feature music by Junction 87. The music starts at 6 p.m. and the doors open at 5:30 p.m. Silent auction items and a 50/50 drawing will help raise funds for local senior high school students. The Arizona Corporation Commission meets in Payson at 6 p.m., Friday, April 11 at the Church of the Nazarene, 200 E. Tyler Parkway. The commission will take public comments on the proposed rate increase sought by the Payson Water Company, which serves Mesa del Caballo, Gisela and a number of other communities in the Rim Country. The Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce plans for the 22nd Annual Business Showcase are well underway. This year’s theme, “You Ought’a be in Pictures,” is sure to be fun for both the booth exhibitors and attendees. Booth exhibitors are encouraged to do a movie themed booth and this year there will be a special Director’s Award for the most innovative. The Business Showcase will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 12 at the Mazatzal Hotel and Casino. Thirty businesses to include the presenting sponsor, Payson Regional Medical Center, have already secured their booths. There are approximately 12 booths left, so call the Rim Country Chamber office at (928) 474-4515 if you want to secure your spot at the Showcase. Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has announced that the Fifth Annual Payson Free Electronics Waste Recycling Event is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, April 12 at the Town of Payson Multi-Event Center, 1400 S. Beeline Highway. ADEQ and its partners — Payson Water Department, Gila County, Tonto Apache Tribe, Northern Gila County Sanitary District, Pine-Strawberry Water Improvement District, CH2MHill and E-Waste Harvesters of Phoenix — anticipate collecting tons of unwanted televisions, computers, monitors, batteries, chargers, cell phones, VCRs, CD and DVD players, printers, small appliances, fax machines, cables and cords during the event. The recyclable material will be collected at the Multi-Event Center, in the south part of Payson across Beeline Highway from Mazatzal Hotel & Casino. E-Waste Harvesters uses state-of-the-art software to erase all hard drives and will provide companies and individuals donating e-waste a certificate of disposal for their records. The event has grown in popularity each of the four previous years with 10,601 pounds collected in 2010, 20,345 pounds in 2011, 23,350 pounds in 2012 and 29,842 pounds last year. AARP Smart Driver Course is from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, April 12, with an hour break for lunch, at the Payson Senior Circle, 215 N. Beeline Highway. To register, call (928) 472-9290 or register in person at Payson Senior Circle. The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members (cash or check), payable on day of class. The course has all new material for 2014. The class is designed for people 50 and older, but is open to everyone 18 and over. Participation may also earn a discount on your vehicle insurance. The Community Yard Sale, sponsored by Community Presbyterian Church, is from 7 a.m. to noon, Saturday, May 3. This is a great one-stop shopping experience featuring numerous vendors. There are still openings for vendors, but space fills up fast, so come in and reserve a space today. The Community Yard Sale is an outreach of CPC giving a great venue for local families to make a few dollars at a very low cost with advertising taken care of. For just $10 per 10-foot-by-19-foot space, vendors can make a great profit from many shoppers coming to one site without all the hassle. The church will be open for restrooms and drinking fountain. All proceeds from this event go to the CPC Deacons Assistance Program that serves families in need in the Rim Country with financial assistance for utilities, rent, prescriptions, and the CPC food pantry. CPC works closely with St. Vincent de Paul to offer citizens help when needed six days a week. The Yard Sale is at 800 W. Main Street (corner of Oak and Main). As the episode begins, Kathryn has made good on her promise from last week of cooking breakfast for Thomas Ravenel, and the pair discuss what dress she should get to accentuate her "beautiful physique" for J.D.'s fete. She wonders if the new couple should be worried about the opposition they will face at the upcoming party. T-Rav loves the potential in his new lass. She's smart and funny and really, really young. Cameran Eubanks meets up with Whitney Sudler-Smith at a cigar bar. Cameran orders the bar's finest Riesling while needling Whitney about his obvious love for personal assistant Brandi. He approaches his relationship with Brandi as purely professional even if he does fantasize about her every night. Whitney should join the yacht club and Brandi should hit up the Junior League while Cameran channels her inner realtor to find Whitney a nice new home. He'll get out of the Bates Motel with mom Patricia. She's a good sell, wrangling in Whitney as her first deep pocketed client. J.D. lists his resume as the reason to celebrate South Carolina. He's a host with the most, and that's why his Carolina Day soiree is the best thing to hit Charleston since this show. Oh, wait. T-Rav arrives for a close shave at J.D.'s barber shop, and Jenna King calls to reveal that she and Cameran will be attending the party together. What, no Lou? J.D. interrogates his friend about his budding new relationship with Kathryn. T-Rav is ready for the father-daughter jokes, and he doesn't care. Poor Shep Rose is still devastated about his situation with M.J. She comes over to his house, and he wants an apology. He's as dramatic as a sixth grade girl who just learned she'll never date any member of One Direction, questioning M.J. about her loyalty and why she's hanging out with her ex-boyfriend from Ohio. It's tragic. He's taken a knife to the heart over the fact that she won't spend as much time with him as he wants. She is as confused as I am. Why can't she hang out with whomever she wants? Is it is his ego? (yes) M.J. quickly grows tired of Shep's whining and hits the road before even getting half way through her beer. At the delicious Husk, Patricia and Whitney order gin drinks in a fashion that would make Meg Ryan's character in When Harry Met Sally beyond proud. T-Rav joins the pair, and it's almost like the Spanish Inquisition, but with less cannons and more cattiness. Patricia dives right in with her questions. While she's impressed with Kathryn's pedigree (her great-great-great-grandfather was John C. Calhoun, after all!), she's not impressed with her Bozo the Clown hair color. She's very familiar with Kathryn as Patricia remembers seeing her in her kitchen after a late night with Whitney. You don't say! Patricia passive aggressively taunts T-Rav about his young paramour, but he is too classy (did I write that?) to take the bait. As he graciously bows out, Patricia laughs that she's drunk at lunch. The fact that Kathryn had breakfast in Patricia's home after an Ann Taylor Loft night with her son totally goes over T-Rav's perfectly coiffed head. Later T-Rav meets up with Kathryn to share his interaction. He tells her that Patricia and Whitney critiqued everything from her age to her hair color. Kathryn responds with a litany of "bullsh*ts." Kathryn explains that Whitney has always praised her in the past. Thomas wonders when the two spent so much time together. Kathyrn admits that Whitney once tried to give her a make-over, but she stops short when T-Rav asks if she was in his bedroom. Um, yes. What's the big deal? Kathryn thought he was gay…even after they made-out. Shockingly, T-Rav buys this excuse hook, line, and sinker. I may need Bravo to give young Kathryn some subtitles for when she's slurring. Patricia summons Whitney from his guitar practice, and the pair enjoy a beverage on the veranda. Whitney's mom questions her son about the banal and pedestrian world of the restaurant business. She suggests that they enlist an old friend who is responsible for Planet Hollywood to invest in her son's dream so that Whitney can spend more time on his film making. Ah yes, Mother. Nothing says culinary class like Don Johnson's framed jacket from Miami Vice as restaurant decor. Speaking of decor, J.D. is overseeing the planning of his big event. He wants to get the details out of the way so that he can party with the best of them. Kathryn and T-Rav prep for the evening. She's applying fake eyelashes while T-Rav bitches about taking down Whitney. Whitney has no clue about the storm that is heading his way. He has bigger fish to fry, like finding a cutting age tux to go with his antique cufflinks. #southofbroadproblems Meanwhile, Jenna and Cameran complain about the torrential downpour that is putting a literal damper on the Carolina Day shindig. Here's hoping Cam's car doesn't get stuck in a flood on the Crosstown! The entire gang is dressing to the nines in anticipation of the big event. The crew descends on Sermets for J.D.'s party. Wait, was that former Leuitenant Governor Andre Bauer? T-Rav loves Kathryn's dress so much, he'd rather forgo the pleasantries and just take it off now. Danni arrives, right on cue. Someone is trying to work the Shep angle now that M.J. is out of the picture. Whitney hates on Craig's Delaware roots. Is he wearing a skinny tie? Oh, the horror! I think Whitney has the vapors! T-Rav and Kathryn bounce into the party, and their friends are in different stages of bitchy over the couple's coming out party. The age difference, her dress! It's all going to be fodder for the Post & Courier for sure. Someone I know would be incredibly nauseated by this Carolina Day situation, but thankfully he doesn't have cable (much less a television) to partake in this debacle. After a history lesson from J.D., the guests share champagne toasts before dinner. Cameran captures the opulence with her iPhone while Jenna jokes about getting to third base under the table. Yup, classy. When Whitney describes Kathryn as a young Rita Hayworth, he's met with grunting and eye-rolling from the tween who doesn't recognize a compliment…or an icon. Whitney can't keep his mouth shut when Thomas starts puffing his chest, and he bets T-Rav that no one would come to a dinner party he hosted. Thomas then threatens to bitch slap his former friend. Yes, folks. Welcome to the South. We bitch slap. It's what gentlemen do. Thomas then accuses Whitney of trying to sleep with his girlfriend as Whitney tries to sleep with everyone who crosses his path. I think that T-Rav accidentally confused Whitney for Kathryn in that accusation. All of T-Rav's friends feel the need to stage an intervention. Craig knows that Kathryn has a hidden agenda. Thomas then puts Kathryn in the hot seat. Did Whitney invite her over? Um, no. I mean, he did. He called her after midnight, and she went to Whitney's for a friendly political debate. Kathryn stumbles over her words (again, Bravo, subtitles!), but swears up and down that Whitney never put the moves on her. T-Rav excuses himself for some air. He's impressed that Kathryn has tried to diffuse the situation. Is that what she was doing? Because to me it looked like she made him look foolish. Like any gentleman would do, T-Rav returns to the table to challenge Whitney to a duel. Shep corners Danni for a make-out, and I'm glad something is finally working out for the poor fella. Kathryn chugs her wine while Whitney and T-Rav head into the rain for fisticuffs. J.D. begs them to utilize the alley way instead of brawling on King Street. Brawling? Is this how Charlestonians brawl? First, T-Rav warns Whitney of his high school wrestling credentials. Next, Whitney reminds T-Rav that if a hand is laid upon him, he'll call the police and have Thomas arrested for assault. How's that for scandal? BAXTER — For the first time in 41 years of military exchanges between Camp Ripley and the Norwegian Home Guard, the Norwegians will arrive in June. The exchange has historically been done in February. For the summer exercise, Camp Ripley soldiers will be going to Camp Porsangmoen, Norway, close to the Russian border. This year’s exchange will involve a smaller number of youth, new conscripts from Norway, and will include a larger number of the regular Norwegian military. Col. Scott St. Sauver, Camp Ripley commander, provided an update on the upcoming training schedule to the Baxter City Council Tuesday. Chinook and Black Hawk helicopters are deploying to Kuwait in May. Soldiers from other states, including Wisconsin and Montana and North Dakota, will be in for training. The camp expects to have 5,188 soldiers in June. St. Sauver said it will be the first time the camp will be noisy with armored units involved, field artillery and bridging units practicing on the Mississippi River. St. Sauver said Camp Ripley has one of two fast water bridge sites in the nation. In July, Camp Ripley expects to host about 936 soldiers. St. Sauver said this summer, after years of deployments, will be closer to normal. For August, the camp expects 2,346 soldiers. By mid-August, both artillery rounds and rockets will be part of the training. St. Sauver said if people see smoke trails going south to north, it will be from the rockets, which have a minimum range of 14 to 15 miles. In 2015, St. Sauver said the camp will be significantly busier with large units and brigades coming in for the entire summer, including bridge units. As soon as the snow departs, the camp expects to commence controlled burning. St. Sauver said the camp has 12,000 to 13,000 acres to burn. This is the first year the camp’s crew is certified to do its own burning. “As soon as we can get after this we will,” St. Sauver said, adding the camp has to get the ranges burned off before soldiers start live fire exercises with artillery. Last year, the camp had $23 million in projects as part of its capital outlay. That will decrease this year, St. Sauver said. In 2013, Camp Ripley had $2.3 million in local contracts and $1.9 million for food. Camp Ripley reported its total economic impact was $304,181,085 in 2013. Camp Ripley is the training site for civilian units as well with Department of Corrections criminal apprehension units, marshal tactical officers association and the American Red Cross. In addition, the camp serves as the training site for all the state’s snowplow drivers. A medical simulation training center is a new facility at Camp Ripley to train combat medics. The facility will simulate full combat requirements day and night, complete with high-technology simulation dummies. The Combined Arms Collective Training Facility (CACTF) trains civilians and soldiers. The $19.5 million addition to the education center with hotel lodging for 48, a classroom for 200 and dining facility to seat 400 should be online in January of 2015. The camp is also home to partners in the Department of Natural Resources and Minnesota State Patrol. St. Sauver said with all troopers on site during the next six weeks, Highway 371 is probably not going to be a good place to exceed the speed limit. In addition to the training facilities, St. Sauver noted the environmental services at the camp won the 2013 Army Environmental Quality Team Award and is now competing at the Department of Defense level, which is a credit to the environmental programs taking care of the natural resources at the camp. Camp Ripley is also looking at green energy, geothermal heating and a solar farm that is looking at becoming a Minnesota Power micro grid. St. Sauver said everyone is interested in green energy right now and Camp Ripley is looking at a lot of those technology areas. “We are really just doing a normal year,” St. Sauver said. “In 2015, we are going to be extremely busy. ... We are going to need support of hotels up here. St. Sauver said some folks will be living here for six to nine months to support the military exercises next season. FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas softball team scored six runs in the first inning on its way to a 9-0 win over Missouri State Tuesday evening at Bogle Park. Amanda Geile and Devon Wallace each homered in the game as the Razorbacks snapped a four-game losing streak. Kasey Fagan and Grace Moll combined for the team’s seventh shutout of the season. With the result, Arkansas improves to 24-14 overall. Arkansas benefitted from four walks in the opening frame and needed just two hits to jump out to a 6-0 lead. The big hits came off the bats of Jessica Harrison with a two-run single and Chloe Oprzedek who capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run triple. The Razorbacks added their seventh run with an RBI single by Jayme Gee in the second inning. Wallace turned on the first pitch she saw in the third and deposited a solo shot over the wall in right field, her team-leading 10th home run of the year. Geile led off the fourth inning by launching her sixth home run of the season, a solo homer to left center. Arkansas has hit at least two home runs in four-consecutive games. In addition to picking up the win Tuesday, Fagan reached base twice and scored two runs. She is now 6-1 in the circle this season. The Razorbacks return to conference play this weekend with a road trip to Tuscaloosa to face No. 4 Alabama. The three-game series begins Friday at 8 p.m. (CT). ITTA BENA, Miss. – An offensive attack that scored runs in the first four innings and a near-perfect pitching performance led Mississippi State to a 13-0 five-inning victory at Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Sam Lenahan, classmate Heidi Shape and freshman Caroline Seitz, the top three hitters in MSU’s order, combined to go five-for-nine with four runs scored and four driven in. The victory lifts MSU to 29-10, tied for the best 39-game record in program history. The Bulldogs are now 16-0 versus in-state opponents since head coach Vann Stuedeman took over the program prior to the 2012 campaign. Seitz stole second and senior Logan Foulks walked to load the bases. Freshman Alexis Silkwood singled up the middle to drive in two and move Foulks to third. Silkwood stole her first career base, but a lineout and fly out ended the frame. The Bulldogs made it a 5-0 advantage in the second with the help of a Mississippi Valley State error. In the top of the fourth, Mississippi State added five runs for a 13-0 cushion. A Foulks single, Phillips hit by pitch with one out and Zdeb single loaded the bases for Winkfield, who singled to center to drive in two for a 10-0 lead. A fielder’s choice reloaded the bases for Lenahan, who walked to make it an 11-0 advantage. After a pop out, redshirt freshman pinch hitter Olivia Golden dropped a double into left center that plated the frame’s final two runs. A fly out closed the inning. Mississippi Valley State (7-26) registered its first base runner in the bottom of the fourth. After a strikeout, Natalia Covarrubias singled down the first-base line. A fielder’s choice and runner caught stealing ended the inning. After retiring the Bulldogs in order in the top of the fifth, the Delta Devilettes recorded two singles in the bottom of the frame but did not score. With one out, Courtenay Brooks singled to third base. After a strikeout, Jahcenda Garrett singled to left. A groundout ended the contest due to the eight-run rule. Mississippi State returns home this weekend for a three-game series against No. 16/18 Missouri. The Gamecocks loaded the bases with two outs after walks to Williams and Mooney, and a Charleston Southern error on Hathorn’s fielder’s choice let freshman pinch runner Taylor Williams score from third to put the Gamecocks up 8-1 after four. The Gamecocks loaded the bases again in the sixth, and Page ended the game with a one-out single to left, scoring sophomore pinch runner Jordan Bizzell. The Tigers (20-15) snapped their five-game losing streak while also tying the team season high for runs scored with 14 and earning 11 hits for the first time since March 1 against Lamar in Tiger Park. In front of the largest crowd in ULM history, the Tigers sent 17 batters to the plate in the fourth inning alone, as the squad did not get its first out of the frame until the 13th batter grounded out to first base. In one of their most efficient nights at the plate on the season, LSU left just seven runners on base while ULM left just five. Seven different Tiger batters produced a hit on the night, with four having multiple hits. The shot of the night belonged to McCasland who hit her first home run of the season and first since the 2012 season as she powered a pitch at her ankles and sent it over the fence for the team’s third grand slam of the season and setting a new career mark for RBI with four. ULM’s Haylie Wilson earned all five innings in the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year, even though she was relieved by Jessica Colliver who faced just three batters before coming back out in favor of Wilson who allowed three runs, two earned on three hits and did not record an out. After a scoreless frame, Simmons took to the fourth and opened the inning with a double that one hopped off of the fence in right field. Falcon singled through the infield and a resulting error in left allowed Simmons to score to make it 3-0, with Falcon moving to second. Wray doubled and drove in another with Falcon scoring to make it 4-0 Tigers. Blades followed up with another single of her own, advancing Wray to third as the LSU left fielder moved to second on the throw in to put two back in scoring position. After a couple of defensive changes for the Warhawks, Andrews was plunked to load the bases full of Tigers. An error brought in one with an infield single by Jaquish plating another to make it 6-0. A wild pitch kept the inning going to give LSU a 7-0 lead, as Bell ripped a shot through the middle to give the Tigers an 8-0 lead. Dylan Supak came on to pinch hit for the Tigers and got hit to load the bases still with no outs on the board. A walk to Simmons scored another run to give LSU a nine-run advantage, with McCasland providing the fireworks with her shoestring bomb to left center clearing the bases and scoring the final runs of the inning to make it 13-0 LSU. After giving up a run, LSU got it back in the very next frame as Falcon cranked a solo shot over the fence in left field to make it 14-1 Tigers with two outs for the only run of the inning. Education system in Indonesia has a lot of ground to cover. Kelase, Wikasa, Harukaedu, Codemi, Tutor, Mahoni, Fodboo, Studentbook, Goesmart, are a few names that are buzzing Indonesia’s educational technology (edtech) startup scenario in the last two years. The latest among them is Codemi launched in February, this year. The education system of Indonesia, including higher education has a lot of ground to cover and here’s an opportunity that startups can’t afford to miss. They’ve taken upon themselves to fill the need gap. According to Novistiar Rustandi, CEO and Founder of Harukaedu, a learning management system targeting higher education, the prospect for ed-tech startups is very good in Indonesia. Shortage of seats: According to data from Ministry of Education in 2010, of the 2.5 million student applicants, only one million are accepted because of the shortage. Shortage of qualified educators: According to data from McKinsey, cities outside Java island are growing fast, while qualified educators mostly live in cities in Java island. Even though the government is building up universities outside Java island, universities are having a tough time due to the shortage of qualified educators. Shortage of skilled workers: According to data from World Bank, 85 per cent companies in ‘manufacturing’ have reported difficulties in finding workers for managerial positions; and 69 per cent reported difficulties in finding workers with specific skills. According to Rustandi, if the above-mentioned problems are not solved, Indonesia could face a shortage of 9 million skilled workers by 2030. As internet penetration gets better and infrastructure improves, he sees “online education or digital education as one of the potential solution. Here is where ed-tech startups can seize the opportunity. He feels that even the investors are quite kicked-up about the educational startups, because of the potential of growth in this market. “Indonesia’s higher education market is predicted to grow five times from US$3 billion to US$15 billion by 2030,” Rustandi, who is also one of the directors of Jakarta Founders Institute, tells e27, adding a word of caution, “But of course to get an investment, the startups have to show a good traction, as well as a strong business model. Like Rustandi, Winastwan Gora, Founder of Kelase is optimistic about the ed-tech scene in Indonesia. Cheaper internet rates are a value-add. Painting a picture of the growth and opportunity in the market, he says, “Let me paint you a picture. In K12 education alone, there are 300,000 schools, 3.9 millions teachers, and 54 millions students. Add to this the number of the parents. Global Ed Tech Startups Awards categorises ed-tech startups into five categories: Curriculum Product, Classroom Needs, School Operations, College Resources, and Everything Else (Other). Popular online learning facility or online cources such as Coursera or Khan Academy fall into College Resources. Companies, which provide Learning Management System (LMS) are categorised under School Operations. “For the sake of simplicity, we can just split ed-tech startups into two types: B2C, which deal directly with end user/consumer, such as Coursera, edx, udacity, udemy, skillshare, etc; and B2B, which deal mostly with educational institutes or training providers ,” says Rama Manusama, CEO of Wikasa. Manusama though casts doubts on the prospects of B2C. “It’s still difficult for startups to make a scalable business. But the prospects are good for B2B,” he says. According to the Master of Science from Erasmus University, B2C business model will face a challenge from poor infrastructure and the lack of usability of online payment – which is hindering e-commerce too – as such supporting facilities are still underdeveloped. “The B2B model will be more straightforward. There are lots of educational institutes, that don’t have Learning Management System (LMS) for example. This is the real need that can be filled by startups,” says Manusama, who received funding from Systec Group recently. His comment is backed by Herry Fahrur Rizal, CEO of Eduqo, an online media, focused at edtech startups. According to Rizal, most of Indonesian ed-tech startups fall under LMS and MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) categories. “Many people still associate ed-tech with online courses. But actually, ed-tech business has a vast range of varieties. If you are passionate about education business, there are many options for you to choose,” he says. Although doubting the supporting infrastructure for B2C business, Manusama advises players to look at the bigger picture, and bigger market potential outside Indonesia. Many founders we spoke to, admit that passion is the reason why they have jumped into the educational startup scenario. “I teach entrepreneurship in Binus University and Technopreneurship in Surya University, and I realised that I have a passion for education. Besides, education industry has a good purpose, while at the same time is also a profitable business,” says Rustandi. Gora from Kelase would “like” to contribute “to the development of Indonesia’s education. Manusama feels that the “internet revolution” has not just brought changes in technology, but has ushered in “social changes” too. “Online education will plays an important role in this era. For the first time in history, everybody can access knowledge instantly. I just want to be a key part of this revolution, and do great things,” he says. He claims that he himself has benefited a lot from the online courses. Quoting a report from Ambient Insight, Rizal from Eduqo says that three years from now, Indonesia will be amongst the top three buyers of mobile learning, after China and India. “Despite all the challenges faced by startup players, I believe that ed-tech business will fly, if there is a nice cooperation among ABG: Academic, Business, and Government,” concludes Rizal. Family is important and the girls have always looked to Abby in the role of a harsh mother. How will this illness affect her relationship with the girls? Will it make her see that everyone is valuable because they are "family" or will she still strive for the perfect team? We know that Nia appears to be excused from the team -- hey, don't yell at me. Yell at Abby Lee. For Abby Lee, each performance has become a battle, so her rehearsal room has turned into the war room. As the team arrives, Holly asks about Mrs. Miller and learns she is not doing well. Mackenzie, though, has Abby directing a photo shoot. As the pyramid starts, Maddie, Mackenzie, Kendall, Chloe and Nia are together on the bottom, but not for goofing up -- because they did what they were supposed to do and kept dancing when the music messed up. Kalani is on the top due to her overall high score. Abby announces that she is holding auditions for a second team which will not necessarily replace the original girls but compete against them. Even with her mom sick, Abby wants more. Abby tells the girls about her mom and Melissa thanks Abby for letting her be a part of her family's life. Maddie and Chloe are both crying because Mrs. Miller has always been there. Abby gives both girls a hug and tells them that dance teachers must love to teach. Abby composes herself and announces that Kendall will have a solo to "Dream It." Nia will perform a solo to "Damsel in Distress." Chole and Kalani will have a duet to "For You Too." The group routine will include everyone and is called "Bollywood and Vine." Then the moms are dismissed. Abby tells us that "Bollywood and Vine" is difficult. Gia is in charge since Abby will not be there. Kira asks why Abby is doing a second team with the problems they are having with costumes. Melissa gets a call from Abby that Mrs. Miller is declining. Nia works on her solo and has wonderful facial expressions. Holly fears that Nia is discouraged because she hasn't placed in competition or had many solos. Kendall is also nervous, and Jill needs Kendall to beat Nia. Great team spirit, Jill. Abby holds auditions for Mackenzie's video. Chloe gets cut and Maddie is named an assistant. Wait! Mackenzie lets Maddie and Nia in the video. I always thought Mackenzie saw things clearer. After all, she's won with Nia before. Mackenzie will go by Mac Z when she sings. The group number has a costume problem. Abby will cut one member from the group and guess who it is: Nia. Nia is supposed to use her time for her solos. Holly tells us that costumes are a problem because Abby just doesn't order enough. Holly is upset and she leaves, telling everyone that she's moving on. At group rehearsal, we learn that Holly feels that cutting Nia makes Abby looks bad. Melissa arrives and gives an update on Mrs. Miller. While the moms feel sorry for Abby, they decide that the girls need to remember the positive things that Mrs. Miller has done. Christi and Kira are happy with their daughters' duet. The girls seem perfectly matched, but Christi sees Chloe as the fall guy if something goes wrong. Holly doesn't like that Abby has a board in the room of all possible new members. Abby doesn't go to the competition. Gia urges them to get the win. Holly gets the girls to share their good memories of Mrs. Miller and leads a time of prayer/meditation. Both Maddie and Chloe break down as they arrive at the competition. In Ohio, the girls fend for themselves. Holly tells Gia that she can bring home the win. Gia calls Abby and learns that Mrs. Miller isn't doing well. Melissa thinks things are more relaxed in the dressing room but the girls need Abby. Jill's not worried about Abby. All she wants is a top five for Kendall. Gia will send the performances to Abby. The duet is up first. Chloe and Kalani perform together well. Their number appears flawless as they work together well. Kendall looks beautiful and even does good facials this week. Chloe encourages Nia as she takes to the stage. Holly is worried but knows Nia has what it takes. This musical theater number is cute and Nia has the facials for it. As the group prepares to take the stage, Holly leads them in prayer. The girls are in character and do a good job. Nia is with Holly in the audience and looks sad. Gia thinks they all did well. That's a welcome change from the complaints. At awards, Nia gets third and Kendall gets second. Chloe and Kalani get first in duet/trios. Yeah, all the girls do good tonight. The group gets first. Gia is all smiles, which is different from what Abby would have been. In the dressing room, the girls tell Abby they won. Nia asks to be in the group next week. Christi sees the day as more about honoring Mrs. Miller. Next week, Abby discuss change, the video is shot and Nia gets on Abby's nerves. Permalink. The NSA's new home in Utah is increasingly looking like a bad idea. While local politicians were likely delighted to have a federal money funnel set up shop in state, that initial euphoria has faded in the wake of the Snowden leaks. Multiple legislative attempts have been mounted by various states to basically nullify the NSA's programs, either directly or indirectly. In Utah, the leverage point has been the public utilities. There is no doubt that the NSA's new data center consumes massive amounts of electricity. But it also goes through water like… water. Not much is known about how much the data center uses (estimates place it at about 1.2 million gallons a day), but one fact that has emerged so far is that the NSA is paying far less ($2.05 vs. $3.35) per thousand gallons than other high-volume businesses. The Tenth Amendment Center has been pushing for the adoption of legislation aimed at cutting off public support (meaning "public utilities") for the NSA's domestic surveillance programs. While this legislative battle has been moving forward, attempts to gain more insight into the NSA's utility usage have been stonewalled by both the City of Bluffdale and the NSA itself. Fortunately, the state has stepped up and ordered Bluffdale to release the NSA's water usage records. This month, the Utah State Records Committee ruled that the City of Bluffdale must release water records pertaining to the massive NSA data center located there. Salt Lake City Tribune reporter Nate Carlisle pursued the information, and his success shows how a series of small, seemingly insignificant actions can lead to a major victory. The committee voted unanimously to require the city to make details of the NSA’s water use public last week. The City of Bluffdale was a major combatant, insisting on collecting a $45/hour fee for compiling responsive documents. All told, the total stood at $767.45 when the reporter brought this to the attention of the State Records Committee. The agency itself was no better. It refused to release info on its water usage by relying on the same excuse it uses for everything: terrorism. By computing the water usage rate, one could ultimately determine the computing power and capabilities of the Utah Data Center. Armed with this information, one could then deduce how much intelligence NSA is collecting and maintaining, and this clearly relates to one of NSA's core missions, which is the collection of foreign intelligence. Robert McMillan at Wired calls bullshit on this argument. The reality is that Sherman's argument requires a pretty big leap of logic. Data center engineers can get rough ideas of compute power based on how much power a building consumes, but figuring this out on water is another matter. Some data centers, like Facebook's facility in Prineville, Oregon, use custom-made swamp coolers to mist the air and cool down servers. Others push hot air into evaporative cooling towers, which are kept cold by running water. "There are many different ways to cool a data center," says Jonathan Koomey, a research fellow at the Steyer-Taylor Center for Energy Policy and Finance at Stanford University."Without knowing more about the actual facility then I don't think anyone's going to give you solid [computing capability] numbers. Without access to all of this water, the NSA's shiny new home can't function. That it consumes over a million gallons a day (at least) should be of concern to Utah's residents, especially considering the ongoing water management issues the state is facing. Early in 2013, water experts met to discuss the problems inherent in the nation's second-driest state -- one which also sports the nation's highest birth rate. Among the many suggestions were removing the tax subsidies from water that kept prices artificially low and starting to meter secondary usage. Nowhere in the discussion was a suggestion to funnel 400+ million gallons a year into a surveillance agency's data center. This cut rate on top of an already artificially low water price would explain the attractiveness of the locale to the NSA, but in the end, it's the rest of Utah's citizens who will be screwed. When its water usage details are finally revealed, one can safely expect there to be more public support for the Tenth Amendment Center's attempt to literally drain the agency of resources. If you liked this post, you may also be interested in... 400ish million gallons of water a year, in a state that already has drought problems, to help a government agency spy on the public and violate their rights... yeah, that water needs to be re-routed to a use not involved with screwing over the public, even a freakin' waterpark would be a better use than selling it to them(at lower rates than everyone else pays at that), as that would at least be enjoyable for people. The more you hear about these security agencies funded by the government, the more it looks like a skunk took a dump in your dinner plate. There is never any good news. On Tuesday, an estimated 35,000 to 40,000 Russian troops equipped with tanks, other armoured vehicles and fixed and rotary wing aircraft remained positioned near the border with Ukraine, a NATO military official told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the information. The military official described the Russian buildup as ‘‘a complete combat force’’ that was highly threatening to Ukraine. Those troops, and future aggressive moves that Putin’s Kremlin may make, have become a troubling concern for NATO countries, especially the alliance’s eastern-most members — the Baltic states, Poland, and Romania, all of which were once in Moscow’s orbit. To reassure those skittish allies, Kerry told a news conference, the US has already sent six F-15 fighters to perform air patrols over the Baltic, deployed a dozen F-16s to Poland and dispatched the USS Truxtun, a guided-missile destroyer, to the Black Sea. ‘‘And more US support is on the way,’’ Kerry said. The Truxtun has already left the Black Sea after taking part in naval exercises with NATO allies Romania and Bulgaria that had been scheduled before the Ukraine crisis. At the Tuesday afternoon meeting Kerry attended with the NATO foreign ministers, the secretary said, ‘‘more allies pledged their own contributions to make sure every ally from the Baltic to the Black Sea feels secure.’’ He did not provide details. A senior US defence official said the US was also likely to send a small team of soldiers to Europe and was encouraging NATO allies to contribute more aircraft to the Baltic air patrol mission. Despite annexing Crimea, Putin and other Kremlin officials have said that Russia has no intention of invading other areas of Ukraine. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu insisted Tuesday the Kremlin wants a ‘‘political settlement that would take interests and rights of the entire Ukrainian people into account. Meeting behind closed doors, Kerry and his Canadian and European colleagues agreed unanimously on steps NATO must take in response to Russian actions. A civilian alliance official who attended the session and briefed reporters afterward on condition of anonymity said the measures include possible deployment and reinforcement of military assets in NATO member countries that feel Moscow’s actions may pose a security threat, as well as an increase of readiness levels for NATO rapid response forces. Other steps include a review of NATO’s crisis response plans, as well as military training and exercise schedules. While NATO ordered the suspension of ‘‘all practical civilian and military cooperation’’ with Russia, Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said later he thought some mutually beneficial cooperation programs with the Russians might continue, such as the project to train anti-narcotics personnel in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Central Asia. The four-star US Air Force general who is NATO’s supreme military commander, Philip Breedlove, has been ordered to devise plans to provide visible reassurance to alliance countries in Central and Eastern Europe that other NATO nations are ready to help protect them ‘‘on land, air and at sea,’’ Kerry said. America’s commitment to NATO’s core principle — that an attack on one alliance member shall be considered an attack on all — is ‘‘unwavering,’’ the secretary said. NATO ministers also met Tuesday with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Deshchytisa. Kerry said ‘‘they stood together in defence of Ukraine’s right to choose its future and in defence of international law.’’ Kerry blasted what he called Russia’s ‘‘tactics of intimidation, especially deployment of unprecedented forces around Ukraine’s borders. On Monday, Russia’s Defense Ministry said one battalion — about 500 troops — had been pulled back, but NATO’s secretary general downplayed talk of a major withdrawal. ‘‘This is not what we have seen,’’ Rasmussen told reporters. ‘‘And this massive military buildup can in no way contribute to a de-escalation of the situation — a de-escalation that we all want to see. So I continue to urge Russia to pull back its troops, live up to its international obligation and engage in a constructive dialogue with Ukraine. Deshchytisa, the Ukrainian foreign minister, told a separate news conference that NATO ministers had treated Ukraine’s situation with ‘‘understanding and support and knowledge. His country doesn’t need weapons, the Ukrainian official said, but is hoping for ‘‘military technical equipment.’’ He said a delegation of experts from NATO member countries was expected to visit Kiev next week for consultations. In other developments, Russia sharply hiked the price for natural gas to Ukraine and threatened to reclaim billions in previous discounts, raising the heat on Ukraine’s cash-strapped government. Alexei Miller, the head of Russia’s state-controlled Gazprom natural gas giant, said the company has withdrawn December’s discount that put the price of gas at NZ$309 per 1,000 cubic meters and set the price Tuesday at NZ$444 per 1,000 cubic meters for the second quarter. The move is expected to eventually hit Ukrainian consumers hard. Household gas prices in Ukraine are set to rise 50 per cent beginning May 1. The Russian discount was part of a financial lifeline that Putin offered Ukraine’s now fugitive president, Viktor Yanukovych, after his decision to ditch a pact with the European Union in favour of closer ties with Moscow. The move fuelled three months of protests that sent Yanukovych fleeing to Russia in February. Also Tuesday, the Russian parliament annulled its deal with Ukraine to rent its Black Sea Fleet’s base in Crimea until 2042 for $NZ113 million a year as well as discounts for Russian natural gas. In Kiev, Ukrainian police moved to disarm members of a radical nationalist group after a shooting spree. Such groups played a key role in Yanukovych’s ouster, but quickly fell out with the new government in Kiev. Many activists are still encamped on Kiev’s Independence Square, known as the Maidan, and have signalled their intent to remain until the May 25 presidential election. Last week, a leader of the most prominent radical group, the Right Sector, was shot dead while resisting police. Right Sector members then besieged parliament for hours, demanding the resignation of Interior Minister Arsen Avakov. They lifted the blockade after lawmakers set up a panel to investigate the killing. Late Monday, a Right Sector member shot and wounded three people outside a restaurant adjacent to Independence Square, triggering a standoff that lasted overnight. Police responded by surrounding the Dnipro Hotel, which Right Sector had commandeered as its headquarters, demanding that the radicals lay down their weapons and leave. Avakov said Right Sector members agreed Tuesday to do so. A bill to provide $1 billion (NZ$1.15b) in loan guarantees to Ukraine and impose sanctions in response to Russia’s incursion into Crimea now heads to President Barack Obama after an overwhelming House vote ended weeks of congressional wrangling. The House voted 378-34 Tuesday to agree to changes approved by the Senate last week to boost the interim Ukrainian government and target Russian and former Ukrainian officials for abuses associated with protests against the government of ousted President Viktor Yanukovych. Consideration of the legislation, initially drafted before Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula, was bogged down by a partisan fight over a provision to reform the International Monetary Fund that the White House sought to have included. Democrats eventually agreed to drop the proposal, which Republicans said was unrelated to the Ukraine crisis and delaying what should have been an immediate and forceful response by Congress to Russia’s aggressive moves. If Obama signs the bill into law as expected, the loan guarantees would help stabilize Ukraine's economy. The bill authorizes US$50 million (NZ$57m) to improve democratic governance and rule of law and fight corruption; support fair elections; and bolster civil society organizations. The bill authorizes an additional US$100 million (NZ$115m) to beef up security cooperation among the United States, European Union and countries in central and eastern Europe and further authorizes the president to provide defense help and additional security assistance to Ukraine and other countries in the region. In separate action, the House voted 399 to 12 to pass a bill that would provide money to step up Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty broadcasts to counter pro-Russian broadcasts in the area. Representative Ed Royce, the Republican chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, says Moscow is using propaganda to sow confusion and fear in the Ukraine.
