FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas softball team scored six runs in the first inning on its way to a 9-0 win over Missouri State Tuesday evening at Bogle Park. Amanda Geile and Devon Wallace each homered in the game as the Razorbacks snapped a four-game losing streak. Kasey Fagan and Grace Moll combined for the team’s seventh shutout of the season. With the result, Arkansas improves to 24-14 overall. Arkansas benefitted from four walks in the opening frame and needed just two hits to jump out to a 6-0 lead. The big hits came off the bats of Jessica Harrison with a two-run single and Chloe Oprzedek who capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run triple. The Razorbacks added their seventh run with an RBI single by Jayme Gee in the second inning. Wallace turned on the first pitch she saw in the third and deposited a solo shot over the wall in right field, her team-leading 10th home run of the year. Geile led off the fourth inning by launching her sixth home run of the season, a solo homer to left center. Arkansas has hit at least two home runs in four-consecutive games. In addition to picking up the win Tuesday, Fagan reached base twice and scored two runs. She is now 6-1 in the circle this season. The Razorbacks return to conference play this weekend with a road trip to Tuscaloosa to face No. 4 Alabama. The three-game series begins Friday at 8 p.m. (CT). Games one and three of the series will be televised on ESPNU and ESPN, respectively, with Beth Mowins and Jessica Mendoza handling the play-by-play and color commentary duties. ITTA BENA, Miss. – An offensive attack that scored runs in the first four innings and a near-perfect pitching performance led Mississippi State to a 13-0 five-inning victory at Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Sam Lenahan, classmate Heidi Shape and freshman Caroline Seitz, the top three hitters in MSU’s order, combined to go five-for-nine with four runs scored and four driven in. The victory lifts MSU to 29-10, tied for the best 39-game record in program history. The Bulldogs are now 16-0 versus in-state opponents since head coach Vann Stuedeman took over the program prior to the 2012 campaign. Senior Alison Owen (14-7) earned the start and allowed just one base runner on a single as she struck out seven, increasing her season total to 168, good for the fourth most in a year in Mississippi State history. Senior Shana Sherrod threw the fifth inning and allowed two singles and fanned one. Tenna Patterson (5-11) suffered the loss, throwing two innings and yielding seven runs, six earned, on seven hits and two walks. Cassandra Rivera came in for the final three frames and allowed six runs on six hits, one walk and one hit by a pitch. Mississippi State wasted little time scoring, jumping ahead 2-0 in the top of the first. Lenahan led off with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a one-out single from Seitz. Seitz stole second and senior Logan Foulks walked to load the bases. Freshman Alexis Silkwood singled up the middle to drive in two and move Foulks to third. Silkwood stole her first career base, but a lineout and fly out ended the frame. The Bulldogs made it a 5-0 advantage in the second with the help of a Mississippi Valley State error. Sophomore Kayla Winkfield reached on a throwing error, stole second and third and scored on a Lenahan double to left field. Shape followed with a single that plated Lenahan. Shape moved to second on the throw home and moved to third as the ball skipped past the catcher. A single to right from Seitz drove in Shape for the five-run cushion. A fly out and pop out closed the inning. MSU scored three more times in the third for an 8-0 lead. Junior Ashley Phillips opened the inning with a single and scored on a triple to right center from senior Rachael Zdeb. Winkfield followed with a bunt single that kept Zdeb on third. Winkfield stole second and on the throw down, Zdeb took off for home as the two executed the double steal for a seven-run lead. Winkfield motored to third on the throw to home and scored on a groundout by senior Jessica Offutt. After a fly out, Shape doubled to left but a foul out left her stranded. In the top of the fourth, Mississippi State added five runs for a 13-0 cushion. A Foulks single, Phillips hit by pitch with one out and Zdeb single loaded the bases for Winkfield, who singled to center to drive in two for a 10-0 lead. A fielder’s choice reloaded the bases for Lenahan, who walked to make it an 11-0 advantage. After a pop out, redshirt freshman pinch hitter Olivia Golden dropped a double into left center that plated the frame’s final two runs. A fly out closed the inning. Mississippi Valley State (7-26) registered its first base runner in the bottom of the fourth. After a strikeout, Natalia Covarrubias singled down the first-base line. A fielder’s choice and runner caught stealing ended the inning. After retiring the Bulldogs in order in the top of the fifth, the Delta Devilettes recorded two singles in the bottom of the frame but did not score. With one out, Courtenay Brooks singled to third base. After a strikeout, Jahcenda Garrett singled to left. A groundout ended the contest due to the eight-run rule. Mississippi State returns home this weekend for a three-game series against No. 16/18 Missouri. Friday’s first pitch it set for 6 p.m. CT while Saturday is at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina (23-12) used a patient approach to dispatch Charleston Southern (19-22-1) in six innings 9-1 in the afternoon half of the split doubleheader on Tuesday at Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field. Redshirt freshman third baseman Lauren Masters and junior catcher Sarah Mooney both went 2-for-2 with two RBI, with Masters scoring once and Mooney hitting the game’s lone double. Mooney was among a trio of Gamecocks to draw two walks each, part of 10 drawn by South Carolina, while sophomore left fielder Alaynie Page stole two bases and scored twice to go with her two walks. Senior shortstop Codee Yeske also drove in two runs and stole a base. After the Buccaneers scored the first run of the game in the top of the first on a passed ball, South Carolina answered back with two in the bottom of the frame. Mooney doubled to left center, allowing both Masters and freshman designated player Victoria Williams to score after they drew one-out walks. The Gamecocks made it 5-1 in the second, starting the scoring on Yeske’s sacrifice fly to left, which scored senior second baseman Dana Hathorn after she reached base to start the inning on a Buc error. Senior right fielder Ashlyn Masters brought home Page after her walk with a hit, extending her hitting streak to 14 games, and Lauren Masters drove home her sister with a single to center. South Carolina added more in the fourth, getting RBI singles from Yeske and Lauren Masters again. Yeske’s hit scored Page after she stole second and moved to third on an error, while Yeske also swiped second before moving to third on Ashlyn Masters’ fly to right. The Gamecocks loaded the bases with two outs after walks to Williams and Mooney, and a Charleston Southern error on Hathorn’s fielder’s choice let freshman pinch runner Taylor Williams score from third to put the Gamecocks up 8-1 after four. The Gamecocks loaded the bases again in the sixth, and Page ended the game with a one-out single to left, scoring sophomore pinch runner Jordan Bizzell. Gamecock freshman Nickie Blue (13-5) got the win, surrendering one unearned run on two hits and three walks in the complete game. She struck out four Buccaneers. Cheyenne Gandara (7-8) took the loss, allowing five runs, two earned, on three hits and three walks in 1.2 innings. Sarratt’s Two-Hitter Guides Gamecocks to 8-0 (5) Win vs. COLUMBIA, S.C. – Gamecock redshirt junior Julie Sarratt tossed a two-hit shutout to help South Carolina (24-12) to an 8-0 win in five innings over Presbyterian (18-15) to close out the split doubleheader on Tuesday night. Sarratt struck out six and walked only one in her third shutout of the season. No Blue Hose player reached second in the 75-pitch outing from Sarratt. Offensively, both Ashlyn and Lauren Masters scored twice, with Lauren also driving in two runs and adding a double in a 2-for-2 day. Ashlyn extended her hitting streak to 15 games with her first-inning single. Freshman designated player Victoria Williams hit her third career homer and drove in a season-best four runs in a 1-for-2 day. Sophomore Ansley Ard also scored and drove in a run while doubling. The Masters sisters started the Gamecocks’ offense with singles in the first, setting up Williams’ three-run homer, an opposite-field blast to make it 3-0. Four more Gamecocks scored in the second after three walks loaded the bases with one out. Lauren Masters hit a two-run double, scoring sophomore outfielders Ard and Alaynie Page. Ashlyn Masters came home on Williams’ grounder to first, while freshman first baseman Kaylea Snaer singled through the left side to score Lauren Masters and give the Gamecocks the 7-0 lead. With one out in the fifth, South Carolina ended the game on Ard’s double to left center, scoring junior catcher Olivia Lawrence after she started the frame with a single. Sydney Seigler (9-8) took the loss for the Blue Hose, allowing six earned runs on three hits and three walks in 1.1 innings of work. Natasha Sherrod tossed the final three innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits. South Carolina closes its home stand on a seven-game winning streak, taking four from in-state rivals in the midweek and a weekend sweep of Mississippi in between. The Gamecocks will try to keep the streak going on Friday when they play at No. 15/17 Georgia. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Jack Turner Stadium in Athens for the series opener. MONROE, La. – Coming off of a weekend where they scored just three runs in three games, the LSU softball team broke out of its slump and snapped its season-long losing streak by taking a two-run lead and exploding for 11 runs in the fourth inning capped by a Kailey McCasland grand slam as the Tigers overwhelmed the ULM Warhawks en route to a 14-1 win Tuesday night at the ULM Softball Complex. The Tigers (20-15) snapped their five-game losing streak while also tying the team season high for runs scored with 14 and earning 11 hits for the first time since March 1 against Lamar in Tiger Park. In front of the largest crowd in ULM history, the Tigers sent 17 batters to the plate in the fourth inning alone, as the squad did not get its first out of the frame until the 13th batter grounded out to first base. In one of their most efficient nights at the plate on the season, LSU left just seven runners on base while ULM left just five. Seven different Tiger batters produced a hit on the night, with four having multiple hits. The shot of the night belonged to McCasland who hit her first home run of the season and first since the 2012 season as she powered a pitch at her ankles and sent it over the fence for the team’s third grand slam of the season and setting a new career mark for RBI with four. Allison Falcon went 2-for-3, hitting her sixth home run of the season in the fifth inning for her only RBI and scored twice. Tammy Wray went 2-for-2 with a double, matching her season high in hits and setting a season high in RBI with two and a run scored. Sandra Simmons went 2-for-2 with a double and scored three times on the night with an RBI, as Jacee Blades went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Sahvanna Jaquish went 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, while Bianka Bell brought in a run on her only hit of the night. Baylee Corbello improved to 10-5 on the season after pitching a two-hitter in three innings of work against the Warhawks, striking out four on just 44 pitches, as Kelsee Selman came in and pitched the final two innings and gave up a run on no hits with three walks and four strikeouts, fanning the final three batters of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. ULM’s Haylie Wilson earned all five innings in the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year, even though she was relieved by Jessica Colliver who faced just three batters before coming back out in favor of Wilson who allowed three runs, two earned on three hits and did not record an out. In the top of the second, Kellsi Kloss led off the inning with a walk to reach first. Simmons put down a bunt single, and then advanced to second on the throwing error with Kloss moving to third to put two in scoring position. A wild pitch scored Kloss to make it 1-0 Tigers, as Simmons moved to third base. Wray connected on a single through the left side to plate Simmons to make it 2-0, as Blades followed back with a bunt single to put two on. A fly out to left and fielder’s choice ended the inning. After a scoreless frame, Simmons took to the fourth and opened the inning with a double that one hopped off of the fence in right field. Falcon singled through the infield and a resulting error in left allowed Simmons to score to make it 3-0, with Falcon moving to second. Wray doubled and drove in another with Falcon scoring to make it 4-0 Tigers. Blades followed up with another single of her own, advancing Wray to third as the LSU left fielder moved to second on the throw in to put two back in scoring position. After a couple of defensive changes for the Warhawks, Andrews was plunked to load the bases full of Tigers. An error brought in one with an infield single by Jaquish plating another to make it 6-0. A wild pitch kept the inning going to give LSU a 7-0 lead, as Bell ripped a shot through the middle to give the Tigers an 8-0 lead. Dylan Supak came on to pinch hit for the Tigers and got hit to load the bases still with no outs on the board. A walk to Simmons scored another run to give LSU a nine-run advantage, with McCasland providing the fireworks with her shoestring bomb to left center clearing the bases and scoring the final runs of the inning to make it 13-0 LSU. After giving up a run, LSU got it back in the very next frame as Falcon cranked a solo shot over the fence in left field to make it 14-1 Tigers with two outs for the only run of the inning.
